Writing Resources

The title is self-explanatory. Here, you'll find resources for any aspiring writers. Note that, since I'm a big fantasy/sci-fi geek, some of these resources will be tailored toward that genre. Sorry for those who don't like fantasy/sci-fi.

Also, if you have any suggestions, such as other useful websites and books, please do tell me and I'll consider adding the site/book/whatever.

Must-Read Books on Writing

» The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. & E. B. White -- Strunk and White's points about grammar and usage are absolutely essential for any writer.
» On Writing by Stephen King -- A lot of information about writing fiction. You may disagree with King on some points (I did), but there's still a lot to learn from his book.
» Story by Robert McKee -- Though this is geared towards screenwriters, you absolutely must read this to learn everything about story structure. It's a fantastic book.

Writing Links

» Gaia Writer's Forum Link List -- Even if you don't go on Gaia, even if you hate it, this is a very comprehensive list that includes many links to articles on writing, writing resources, etc., both within and outside of Gaia. Definitely worth a look.
» Limyaael's Fantasy Rants -- Absolutely a must-read for fantasy writers. Limyaael has read a lot of fantasy and has a lot to say about what not to do in the genre. There are quite a few rants, so I suggest looking for some sort of master list of them all. Note that most of her older rants can be found on her Livejournal.
» A Way With Worlds
» Ficiton Writing: Tips for Creative Writers
» FictionPress.Com -- Probably the most well-known place to put your original fiction up online and have others read and review them.
» FanFiction.Net -- The best website for putting up your fanfiction and having others read and review them.

The Twilight/Eragon Center

I loathe both of these series, and throughout my internet travels I've found some interesting articles written about them. Some are funny, and some are excellent pointers on what not to do in writing.

On Eragon and the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini:
» Anti-Shurtugal LJ: Hate Eragon? Then this is the community for you. They have all sorts of interesting discussions on writing, sporkings, and angry rants.
» The Battle of the Burning Plains, Or 101 Things That Don't Happen in Battles: If you're going to write a fantasy war, don't screw up as badly as Paolini did, or you'll become a laughingstock.
» The Dangers of Fantasy Cartography: Want to make a map of your world? Don't copy Paolini. Here's why.
» The Anti-Shurtugal Epistles: Some of the outstanding thorough, articulate critiques on Eragon.

On Twilight and the series by Stephenie Meyer:
» Venom Apple LJ: Community for the Twilight-haters. It's not as active anymore since the Twilight series finished, but still worth a look around.
» Twilight Makes For the Best Fanwank Ever: Not as much advice for writing, but downright hilarious. If you're ever in a bad mood over the popularity of Twilight, read this to cheer yourself up.
» Write-Your-Own-Twilight Manual: Read this. That's all I can say. Sarcastic, funny, and educational for all novice writers. Read the other articles by this blogger, too.
» Twilight Comic: If you can't be bothered to read the 500-page tome, read this comic for a concise summary of the book. Also see the Breaking Dawn one if you're not afraid of spoilers.
» Edward Cullen: Abusive Boyfriend, from Gaia Online: The bottom line: if you're going to write a True Luv relationship, don't make it an abusive one.
